New Delhi: Manchester United have made their first signing of the summer by bringing in Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha on a five-year contract. The Red Devils have agreed to pay Wolves a reported £62.5 million for the 26-year-old, making him the first addition under new manager Ruben Amorim.

The deal was completed after United agreed to meet the release clause in Cunha’s contract. Initially, the club hoped to spread the payments over five years, but Wolves insisted on receiving the money in three instalments over two years, something United eventually accepted.

From Brazil to Old Trafford

Cunha’s journey to Manchester has been anything but straightforward. He began his career with Coritiba in Brazil before moving to Swiss side Sion in 2017. After a standout season there, he earned a move to RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga, then spent time at Hertha BSC and Atletico Madrid.

In January 2023, Wolves brought him in on loan, and his impact was strong enough to convince the club to make the move permanent later that year. Over his time at Molineux, Cunha made 92 appearances and scored 33 goals. Last season, he found the net 17 times in all competitions, including 15 goals in the Premier League, and also chipped in with six assists.

What Cunha brings to Man United

United are coming off a disappointing campaign that saw them finish 15th in the Premier League, well off the European spots. The signing of Cunha is a clear signal that the club wants to bounce back quickly.

Known for his versatility, Cunha can play as a central forward, second striker, or even out wide. His energy and creativity will give Ruben Amorim more options in attack and help address United’s goal-scoring woes—only Everton scored fewer goals than United last season among the teams that stayed up.

What’s next?

Cunha is currently with the Brazil national team as they prepare for their World Cup qualifier against Ecuador, which will be Carlo Ancelotti’s first game in charge. After the match, he’s expected to return to Manchester to meet his new teammates and begin pre-season preparations.

Bringing Cunha on board is an important first step as Manchester United look to rebuild and return to competing at the top level, both domestically and in Europe. Fans will be hoping that his arrival marks the start of a much-needed revival at Old Trafford.
