New Delhi: Ruben Amorim was clearly disappointed with Manchester United’s latest 3-1 loss against Brighton and Hove Albion. The loss had prompted the 39-year-old to call this the “worst” team in the history of the club’s existence. For a side that has lifted 20 top-flight titles including 13 Premier League titles, it might not be too far from the truth as they continue to struggle this season.
After 22 games, United have managed to take just 26 points, winning just seven times in the top flight this season. They are just ten points above the relegation zone and look unlikely to make a European qualification for the next season. In the Premier League era, where United finished eighth last season, this season is set to be the lowest United have ever finished.

How do the stats look in Manchester United’s ‘worst’?
Currently, the Red Devils are 24 points behind table leaders and rivals Liverpool. One of the biggest reasons for such poor performance has been their horrid home form. The last time United had a worse form at home was 1893-94. They have lost six games from 12 games at Old Trafford this season.
Under Amorim, United have lost seven of 15 games since the Portuguese manager took over in November, with four losses in the Premier League coming at home. To compare this side, we have the one Alex Ferguson led between 1986 and 2013. Under the Scottish manager, United had finished in the top two, 20 times in the 26 full seasons. Since Ferguson’s retirement, United have managed to finish in the top two only twice, both times as runners-up.
Amorim was the tenth manager, either permanent or interim who has been at the helms of United since Ferguson’s retirement. Recently, Amorim had said that the side was too nervous and could for the first time since 1974 be relegated from the top division of English football. Back then the team was promoted back to the top tier the very next year and never looked back.
Recently Forbes estimated that Manchester United were valued at $6.55 billion, making them the 14th most valuable sports team in the world.
There remains little doubt that United are far away from their glory days and need to reinvent themselves. Amorim after the Brighton loss noted that the team could become successful but at the moment every individual was underperforming. In fact, Amorim had replaced Ten Hag owing to the repeated failures and poor performances this season.
