New Delhi: Indian opener Smriti Mandhana, all-rounder Deepti Sharma and wicketkeeper Richa Ghosh were included in the Women’s T20I Team of the Year 2024 as announced by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Saturday, January 25. South Africa international batter Laura Wolvaardt was named the captain of the team. She has amassed 673 runs at a strike rate of 125.09 in 19 matches, including one century and three half-centuries.
Mandhana scored 763 runs at an average of 42.63 in 23 T20I matches with the help of eight half-centuries. Her brilliant performances propelled her to the second position in the ICC Women’s T20I Batting Rankings. She started her year with a brilliant 54 against Australia at the DY Patil Stadium and similarly ended the year, with three consecutive half-centuries against West Indies at home.
The Indian wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh stands out for her brilliant ability to score runs with her attacking style of play. She smashed an unbeaten 64 runs off 29 balls at an explosive strike rate of 220.68 against UAE in Dambulla.
Deepti Sharma is a consistent performer for Team India. She has played a key role for the team with the bat and ball. Deepti picked up 30 wickets at an average of 17.80 and an economy rate of 6.01 across T20I matches last year. The 27-year-old took wickets in almost every T20I match, with brilliant performances like 3/13 from 4 overs against Nepal in Dambulla and 3/20 from 4 overs against Pakistan in the Women’s Asia Cup, solidifying her position in the team.
The Sri Lankan captain Chamari Athapaththu had a sensational year as she led her team to a memorable Asia Cup victory in July. She amassed 720 runs at an average of 40 in 21 T20I matches, including two hundreds and four Fifties. She also took 21 wickets at an average of 16.80 and an economy rate of 6.36 in T20Is. Apart from them, England’s Nat-Sciver Brunt, Pakistan’s Sadia Iqbal and Ireland’s Orla Prendergast are also included in the T20I team of the year.
