New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the 15-member squad for the 2025 Champions Trophy which is scheduled to begin on February 19 in Pakistan and UAE. The Men in Blue will open their Champions Trophy campaign against Bangladesh on February 20 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
Rohit Sharma will lead the team while Shubman Gill is named as the vice-captain of the squad. Star pacer Jasprit Bumrah is also included in the 15-member team. He suffered a back spasm during the last Test against Australia in Sydney.
Bumrah took 32 wickets in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and won the Player of the Series award for his stunning performance. He was taken for scans on Day 2 of the last Test and didn’t bowl a single over after that. Team India lost the five-match Test series by 3-1 and failed to qualify for the final of the World Test Championship.
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar talked about Bumrah’s availability for the upcoming Champions Trophy. Agarkar said that the selection committee is awaiting Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness status. As a result, Harshit Rana is included in India’s squad for the three-match ODI series against England.
“Bumrah was asked to offload for five weeks, BCCI will put something out from the medical team. Hopefully he is okay after first week of February. We are waiting on Bumrah’s fitness and Harshit Rana will be part of England ODIs. Bumrah will not be able to be ready for two ODIs vs England, we are waiting for his status” Agarkar told reporters.
‘We are not sure about Bumrah’: Rohit Sharma
The Indian captain Rohit Sharma also said that the team is not sure about Bumrah whether he is going to play or not. Mohammed Siraj has been dropped from the team while Arshdeep Singh and Mohammed Shami have been included in the team.
“We are not sure about Bumrah, whether he is going to play or not. So, we thought we wanted someone who can bowl with the new ball and at the backend” Rohit said.
