New Delhi: Manu Bhaker etched her name in history books by claiming her second medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics. The 22-year-old athlete clinched another bronze in shooting but this time it was in a 10m Air Pistol Mixed team event with her partner Sarabjot Singh. The Indian pair edged past the formidable Koreans 16-10 to earn the country its second medal at the showpiece event.
In the process, Bhaker became the first Indian Olympian post-independence to claim two medals in a single edition of the Olympics.
The only Indian athlete to claim two medals at a single edition of the Games is Norman Pritchard won two silver medals in athletics during the 1900 Games when India was under British rule.
Two Indian athletes have won two medals in the Olympics but both have come in different editions.
Sushil Kumar (Wrestling) bagged a bronze at the Beijing 2008 Olympics before claiming a silver medal at London 2012, after which he became the first individual athlete from India to win multiple medals post-independence.
PV Sindhu (Badminton) won silver in the Rio Olympics and continued her remarkable run with a bronze at Tokyo 2020. Sindhu was the only woman athlete from India to win multiple medals at the Olympic Games and now Bhaker matches and surpasses her feat with two bronze medals at a single edition.
Sarabjot redeems himself
The young shooter redeemed himself with a terrific performance in the mixed-team event. Sarabjoot failed to make the cut in the men’s 10m Air Pistol final after finishing in ninth place, one short of the qualifying spots, missing out by scoring fewer inner 10s.
Manu and Sarabjot looked laser-focused against the formidable Koreans, opening a healthy lead at 14-6. But the Koreans bounced back with two back-to-back series wins to give the Indians a massive scare. In the end, both Indian shooters held their nerves and sealed the victory.
