New Delhi: Indian athletes Manu Bhaker, Harmanpreet Singh, D Gukesh, and Praveen Kumar on Friday were conferred with the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award. President of India, Droupadi Murmu, presented the prestigious award to all the four sportsperson at the Rashtrapati Bhavan during the national sports award ceremony.

The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports announced the complete list of national sports awards on January 2 this year. Apart from the four Khel Ratna awards, there were 32 more athletes who have received the Arjuna award.

Manu Bhaker won a historic two bronze medals at the Paris Olympics last year, making her the first individual athlete to win two medals in a single Summer Games edition in the post-independence era. Gukesh became the youngest player to win the World Chess Championship title.

Harmanpreet was the captain of the Indian men’s hockey team, who bagged successive bronze medals at the Olympic Games. Praveen clinched gold medal in the men’s high jump T64 category at the Paris Paralympics.

What do Khel Ratna Award winners get?

All the Khel Ratna Award winners receive a cash prize of INR 25 lakh along with a citation (certificate) and a medallion. The objective of the award given by the Sports Ministry is the recognition of the outstanding achievement and performance by sportspersons in the field of sports.
