New Delhi: Manu Bhaker scripted history at the Paris Olympics 2024 on Sunday, July 28 as she became the first Indian female shooter to win an Olympic medal. Manu finished third in the final of the women’s 10m air pistol event to claim the bronze medal. The 22-year-old shooter bagged India’s first medal at the Paris Games.
Manu brought and end to India’s 12-year-long medal drought in shooting at the Olympics with her bronze in the women’s 10m air rifle event. Competing against some of the best in the world in the final, Manu displayed her excellent composure and temperament to take the third spot on the podium. She finished behind South Korea’s Oh ye Jin and Kim Yeji.
Oh Ye Jin won the gold medal with a total score of 243.2, creating a new Olympic record while Yeji settled for the silver with a score of 241.3 points. Manu took the bronze medal after finishing with a score of 221.7. It was a solid start for Manu in the final as she finished with a score of 50.4 in her first five shots to take the 2nd spot in the overall rankings.
Manu shot over 10s in her last six shots in the final but that was not good enough as the two South Koreans shared the top two spots between them to take both the gold and the silver medal. Manu is not only the first Indian to bag a medal at the Paris Games but also the first shooter since 2012 to win a medal for India at the Olympics.

Indian shooters with medals at Olympics:
2004: Rajyavardhan Singh Rathod – silver medal
2008: Abhinav Bindra – gold medal
2012: Vijay Kumar – silver medal
2012: Gagan Narang – bronze medal

It was a shot at redemption for Manu in the final on Sunday after a gun malfunction denied her a shot at a medal at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. Expectations were high from the 22-year-old after she qualified for the final by finishing third in the qualification round on Saturday. She lived up to the expectations by ending India’s shooting jinx at the Olympics and giving the country its first medal at the Paris Games.
