New Delhi: Delhi welcomed its new Chief Minister on 20 February 2025 as Rekha Gupta was sworn into office. Before assuming office, she paid a visit to the Marghat Wale Hanuman Baba Mandir in Yamuna Bazaar, seeking divine blessings. Accompanied by her family, the newly appointed CM offered prayers at the revered temple, a tradition she has followed for years.
Rekha Gupta, known for her spiritual inclination, has visited this temple multiple times in the past. The Marghat Wale Hanuman Mandir holds a special place among Delhi’s prominent religious sites, with a rich mythological and historical significance that draws thousands of devotees.
Mythological Significance of Marghat Wale Hanuman Mandir
The origins of the temple trace back to the Ramayana era. According to legends, while carrying the Sanjeevani herb to Lanka to save Lord Lakshman’s life, Lord Hanuman saw the Yamuna River flowing through this region. Deciding to rest for a moment, he descended at this spot, only to discover it was a cremation ground (Marghat).
His presence is believed to have driven away evil spirits that haunted the area, granting them moksha (salvation). Pleased with this divine act, Goddess Yamuna is said to have promised Hanuman that she would visit this place once every year to offer her respects. Over time, the temple came to be known as Marghat Wale Baba Hanuman Mandir, symbolising its association with the sacred and the supernatural.
A Unique Underground Idol of Hanuman
One of the temple’s most distinctive features is its underground idol of Lord Hanuman, which lies seven to eight feet beneath the ground. Initially, the temple stood right at the banks of the Yamuna River, but as the river gradually receded, the temple was left farther inland.
However, devotees believe that whenever Yamuna’s water level rises, the river reaches the temple to fulfil the divine pact between Goddess Yamuna and Lord Hanuman. This annual phenomenon is seen as a testament to the temple’s spiritual legacy.
A Sacred Site for Devotees
Situated near a cremation ground, the temple holds a belief that those whose last rites are performed here attain salvation through Hanuman’s blessings. This belief strengthens the temple’s mystique and spiritual prominence.
On Tuesdays and Saturdays, the temple witnesses large crowds of devotees, many of whom wait in long queues for hours to seek Hanuman’s blessings. The temple is also the site of grand Hanuman Jayanti celebrations, attracting thousands of worshippers every year.
