New Delhi: International Cricket Council (ICC) president Jay Shah on Thursday announced the revised prize money for the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 final participants. The summit clash of this edition of the Test cricket’s showpiece event will be played between Australia and South Africa at Lord’s from June 11.

Australia are the defending champions, having won the 2023 final against India in London to win the second edition of the marquee championship. New Zealand won the inaugural edition in 2021 when they beat India to claim their first ICC title in close to two decades.

Now, after the success of two editions, ICC, under the leadership of former BCCI president Shah, have significantly increased the prize money for the winner and the runner-up.

Shah made the announcement on his X (formerly Twitter) handle with his statement saying: “It’s exciting to announce that the winner of the #WTC25 Final between South Africa and Australia will earn $3.6M, with the runner-up to receive $2.1M. The increase in prize money exhibits our efforts to prioritize Test cricket and build on momentum from previous WTC cycles.”

Significant increase in prize money

The current prize money is more than double what was awarded in the previous edition. Australia had received $1.6 million for winning the final against India in 2023, while the runners-up of the previous two editions got $800,000.

At the end of the WTC cycle, South Africa finished at the top of the table with back-to-back 2-0 home series wins over Sri Lanka and Pakistan. The twin victories helped the Proteas finish on 69.44 percentage points. Meanwhile, holders Australia finished with 67.54 points, well ahead of Team India, which finished with 50.00 percentage points despite leading the table for the majority of the time.

ICC, under the leadership of former BCCI president Shah, have significantly increased the prize money for the winner and the runner-up of the third edition of the World Test Championship (WTC) final between Australia and South Africa.  Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
