New Delhi: Manchester United have completed the signing of Brazilian winger Matheus Cunha for a £62.5m fee. Cunha described the move to Old Trafford as a “dream becomes reality” moment and one that he had been looking forward to since his childhood days.
United triggered a release clause in Cunha’s Wolves contract earlier this month, but the deal, which was subject to a visa and a medical, was completed today (Thursday, June 12). The former Atletico Madrid attacker has signed a five-year contract with United with the option of a 12-month extension.
“It is hard to put into words my feelings about becoming a Manchester United player,” he said after completing the move.
“Ever since I was a child in Brazil watching Premier League games on TV at my grandmother’s house, United was my favourite English team and I dreamed of wearing the red shirt.
“I want to thank my family and everyone who has helped me make that dream a reality.”
Cunha amassed 31 goals in 76 games for Wolves after arriving from Atletico in 2023.
“Bringing in Matheus was one of our main priorities for this summer, so we are delighted to have completed his signing so early in the window,” said United director of football Jason Wilcox.
Cunha’s signing is a big swoop for United, who finished a lowly 15th in the Premier League last season and will not play European football in the next campaign. United, who have not reached the Champions League knockout stages in the last three years, beat tough competition to sign the versatile player.
The rebuild begins
The signing of Cunha marks the beginning of the project rebuild at Old Trafford after the worst finish in the Premier League era. In Ruben Amorim’s first season in charge, United finished three spots above the relegation zone and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham. The 2024-25 season was a historic low for the 20-time champions, who have experienced unprecedented success in the English top-flight and on the European stage.
But as they say, sometimes you have to fall apart to fall back together, and United have identified the urgent need to fix the issues. The biggest one was the inefficiency in the final third, and Amorim recognised Cunha as an ideal fit to unlock the attacking potential.
Talks with Brentford to sign Bryan Mbeumo are also in progress, and United seem confident of landing the Cameroon winger despite seeing their initial bid of £55m rejected.
Prolific Swedish striker Viktor Gyokeres is also one target that United are pursuing aggressively, and despite reported initial disagreement with Sporting CP, should be able to land the forward.
