Meet OXO-001: A first-ever pill that may boost chances of IVF success

New Delhi: A new pill created by Spanish biotech company Oxolife, known as OXO-001, is offering new hope for IVF patients by showing in a trial that it can boost the chances of getting pregnant. The pill is likely to improve the odds of a successful IVF treatment by 7% and it could also reduce the risk of stillbirths. Researchers said that they tried to test the drug, which is created to act on the inner lining of the uterus, thereby improving the odds of implantation during the treatment. The pill will help the uterus become more receptive to the embryo.

How does OXO-001 improve odds of IVF success?

Known as OXO-001, the pill is said to be a first of its kind and has already undergone safety checks in early phases. The pill is said to work by enabling the expression of key molecules that allow embryos to stop rolling across the surface of the uterus to complete and evade implantation. The study found that this pill could help improve a woman’s chances of getting pregnant. For this, 96 women aged 40 years and less who were underdoing fertility treatment like intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) with donor eggs or IVF across 28 facilities in Europe were enrolled for the study. It was conducted between September 2021 and January 2023.

Participants were given a placebo or OXO-001 twice daily one period before the embryo transfer and for five more weeks after. It was found that ongoing pregnancy rates measured 10 weeks after the embryo transfer were 46.3% for patients give OXO-001 as compred to 35.7% for women give placebo. Furthermore, live birth rate improved by 42.6% for women taking this pill and 35.7% for those given placebo.

What are the side effects of OXO-001?

Side effects noted in both groups were similar. These included:

Vomiting
Headaches
Nausea
Dizziness
Gastrointestinal discomfort

The drug will be now tested in a larger group and it will also involve women using their own eggs.
