New Delhi: The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced Mehidy Hasan Miraz as the new captain of the ODI team on Thursday, June 12. The decision came just less than a month ahead of the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka, which is set to begin on July 2.

Shanto recently stepped down from the T20I captaincy in order to concentrate on his batting and was all set to continue as ODI skipper, but the board felt that Miraz’s consistent performances on the field made him an ideal candidate to lead the team.

Chairman of BCB’s Cricket Operations Committee Nazmul Abedeen said that Miraz’s ability to fight and inspire the team, made him the right candidate to lead the ODI side during a transitional time.

“We believe he has the temperament and maturity to take Bangladesh forward in this format. We take this opportunity to thank Shanto for the positivity and character he has demonstrated as captain. He remains very much a part of the leadership group, and we know how important his batting is to the team,” he added.

He has played 105 ODI matches and scored 1617 runs at an average of 24.5. He also picked up 110 wickets and is currently ranked No. 4 among all-rounders in the ICC ODI rankings. He is also a part of the elite company, comprising Mohammad Rafique, Mashrafe Bin Mortaza, and Shakib Al Hasan, who have achieved the milestone of scoring 1000 runs and taking 100 wickets in the ODI format at the highest level.

‘It’s a huge honour for me’: Mehidy Hasan

After becoming the ODI skipper, Mehidy Hasan said that it’s a huge honour for him and leading the country is a dream for any cricketer. Mehidy further added that he’s grateful for the confidence shown by the Bangladesh Cricket Board.

“I have every faith in this team. We have the talent and the belief to play fearless cricket. I want us to perform with confidence, play without inhibition and continue giving our best for the country” he said. Mehidy has previously captained the national team in four ODI matches in the absence of Najmul.
