Menstrual Hygiene Day: 8 ways to prevent UTI right after your periods

New Delhi: Urinary tract infection (UTI) is more common in women than men. This can be linked to factors like having a shorter urethra (the tube that brings urine out of the bladder). UTI happens when an infection develops in the urinary system and most often affects the lower urinary tract. It is a quite painful experience and may even cause fever or other health issues. Dr Anusha Rao P Consultant Obstetrics & Gynaecology told News9, “Preventing urinary tract infections (UTIs) after your menstrual period involves several practical and hygienic measures.”

Here are some effective strategies to minimise the risk:

Maintain Proper Hygiene: Wash the genital area with warm water and mild, unscented soap to remove any menstrual blood residue.

Change sanitary pads from time to time: Change tampons, pads, or menstrual cups every 4-8 hours. Prolonged use can promote bacterial growth. Use unscented and hypoallergenic period products to minimise the irritation.

Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Enough hydration helps clear the bacteria out of the urinary tract.

Do not hold urine for long: Don’t hold urine for extended periods. Frequent urination may help to flush out bacteria from the bladder. Make sure to urinate after sexual intercourse to help eliminate any bacteria that may have entered the urethra.

Wear Breathable Clothing: Opt for cotton underwear and avoid tight-fitting clothes to keep the genital area dry and reduce moisture buildup, which can foster bacterial growth. Incorporate a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and probiotics. Foods like yoghurt and kefir contain beneficial bacteria that support urinary tract health.

Drink cranberry juice: Consider taking cranberry supplements or drinking cranberry juice, which may help prevent bacterial adhesion to the urinary tract walls.

Avoid using Vaginal sprays: Steer clear of douches, vaginal sprays, and scented powders that can irritate the urethra and disrupt the natural balance of bacteria.

Practice Safe Sex: Use condoms to reduce the risk of bacteria entering the urinary tract during sexual activity. Also, Ensure both partners maintain good genital hygiene.
