MHIP Day: Why is the day celebrated in Mizoram?

New Delhi: There is a general rule acknowledged by every developed nation that for a soceity to progress, its women must progress. Mizoram supports this every year on July 6 by organising the MHIP day. The full form of MHIP is Mizo Hmeichhe Insuihkhawm Pawl. In the Mizo language, it means ‘binding women together’ and the MHIP plays a crucial role in empowering the women of the state. In this article, we will learn more about this organisation.

When was the Mizo Hmeichhe Insuihkhawm Pawl formed?

The Mizo Hmeichhe Insuihkhawm Pawl was formed in Mizoram on July 6, 1974. The objective of establishing this organisation was and still remains to empower women and support their rights. In 2013, this organisation orchestrated the proposal of several bills in the Mizoram Legislative Assembly, like the Mizo Inheritance Bill, the Mizo Marriage Bill, and the Mizo Divorce Bill. The 2014, Mizo Marriage Divorce and Inheritance of Property Act brought to an end the age-old practice in the state in which a wife ended up penniless after a divorce if she did not have employment of her own. According to the Act, a wife would get up to 50 per cent of any property after the divorce. The MHP, ahead of the state Assembly elections in 2018, called for more women candidates to compete in the polls.

It must be noted here that the MHIP works as a philanthropic Non-Governmental Organisation and has volunteers from different parts of life, most of whom are women. It is the largest NGO in Mizoram and the only one solely dedicated to the welfare and upliftment of women.
