Mohammad Rizwan to replace Babar Azam as Pakistan’s white-ball skip? PCB to hold meet

New Delhi: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is reportedly said to hold a meeting later in the month to assess the plans for the national team across formats. The board chaired by Mohsin Naqvi will hold a ‘Connection Camp’ a meeting-cum-workshop for the top officials to chart the course of actions to redeem Pakistan’s fortunes that has hit rock bottom in the last few months.

According to a report from Geo News, sources have mentioned that white-ball coach Gary Kirsten, red-ball coach Jason Gillespie  heads of high performance centres, senior cricketers, senior board officials as well as international and domestic directors will attend the Connection Camp, which is likely to be held on September 22.

On Friday, sources told Geo News that wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan will take over the white-ball captaincy reigns from Babar Azam apart from the assessment on Shan Masood’s Test captaincy after the 34-year-old has failed to win in his first five Test matches.

The report indicated that the white-ball captaincy change could come ahead of Pakistan’s tour of Australia in November, where the national team plays three One-Day Internationals and as many T20 Internationals.

Babar’s future as Pakistan captain looks gloomy

If the reports are to be believes then Babar won’t lead Pakistan in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 scheduled on home soil. This will also be the second instance when the Lahore-born player will be replaced as Pakistan skipper.

After Pakistan failed to advance for the semifinals in the 2023 World Cup in India, Babar stepped down from captaincy roles across formats only to take back the white-ball charge in March this year. Left-arm pacer Shaheen Afridi wasn’t given long-term after failure to win first T20I series in New Zealand (Pakistan lost 1-4) as new white-ball captain.

Under Babar Azam, Pakistan failed to qualify for the Super 8 stage in the T20 World Cup 2024 in the United States of America and the West Indies. The shocking loss to co-hosts USA in a pool fixture only dampened Babar’s credentials as a leader.
