New Delhi: Mohammed Shami was spotted bowling in the nets for Team India with his knee heavily strapped ahead of his much-awaited comeback after 14 months due to an injury layoff. All eyes were on Shami as India began training at the Eden Gardens on Sunday ahead of the start of the five-match T20I series against England. Shami has been picked in India’s T20I and ODI squad for the England series.

The England series will be crucial for the senior pacer as he has also been selected in India’s squad for the Champions Trophy 2025 and is expected to play an important role in the multi-nation tournament that gets underway next month. Shami was seen bowling in full throttle during India’s training session at the Eden Gardens on Sunday.

The session was attended by India head coach Gautam Gambhir, newly-appointed batting coach Sitanshu Kotak and bowling coach Morne Morkel. Shami was also seen having a lengthy discussion with Morkel while bowling in the nets. However, his strapped left knee sparked concerns among fans as the pacer has recently recovered from a knee injury.

Shami suffered a chronic heel injury during India’s campaign in the 2023 ODI World Cup and underwent surgery on his Achilles tendon last year. The pacer was expected to return in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia but was not given the green light from the NCA due to a knee swelling issue.

Shami, however, made his comeback for Bengal in domestic cricket and played matches in the Ranji Trophy, Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 and the Vijay Hazare Trophy to prove his fitness. He was then selected in India’s squad for the T20I series against England before being named in the squad for the ODI series against the visitors and the Champions Trophy 2025.

Shami to spearhead India’s pace attack in England T20Is

Shami will spearhead India’s pace attack in the upcoming five-match T20I series against England with Jasprit Bumrah not in the squad. Bumrah is currently recovering from a back niggle but has been named in the Champions Trophy squad. The ace pacer is expected to return for the final ODI of the three-match series against England ahead of the Champions Trophy.

In his absence, Shami will lead India’s pace attack in the T20I series against England which consists of the likes of Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh and Hardik Pandya.
