New Delhi: Ace Indian pacer Mohammed Shami has been out of cricketing action since the ODI World Cup 2023. The Indian pacer played a pivotal role in the showpiece event after becoming the highest wicket-taker in the event. Shami, who had an injury to his ankle during the event, underwent a surgery in February 2024 for the same.
Since last 5 months, the veteran Indian player has been recovering and has made significant improvement. Recently, Shami was also seen at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru, practicing hard for his much-awaited comeback. While it is believed that the fast bowler will make a comeback into the Indian team during the Test series against Bangladesh later in the year, Shami has himself provided an update on his return.
Shami to play for Bengal
According to a report in Times of India, the senior pace bowler has confirmed that he would play a few games for Bengal before making his return to Indian team during the Bangladesh Test series in September or during India tour of Australia in November-December. Before that, he’s expected to return in the Ranji Trophy matches for Bengal.
“It’s difficult to say when I will be back. I am trying hard, but hopefully you will get to see me in Bengal colours before I don the India jersey again,” he was quoted as saying. “I will come to play two-three matches for Bengal and will come fully prepared for it,” he added.
During Gautam Gambhir’s first press conference as head coach of the Indian cricket team last month, India’s chief selector, Ajit Agarkar, hinted at Shami’s comeback during the two-match Test series against Bangladesh in September.
India will face Bangladesh in two Tests at home in September and then take on New Zealand in a three-match Test series before flying to Australia in November for a five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
