New Delhi: India fast bowler Mohammed Shami will be rested for Bengal’s opening Vijay Hazare Trophy match against Delhi. Shami was looking to showcase his full fitness in the domestic tournament with a potential return to India’s Test squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. He was originally named in Bengal’s 20-member squad for the tournament but will sit out of the match in Hyderabad on December 21.
Shami played a crucial role in India’s sensational campaign in the 2023 ODI World Cup. He underwent ankle surgery after the World Cup and didn’t play a single match for Team India. He missed major tournaments like IPL 2024, and T20 World Cup. He was on track for a comeback during India’s home Test matches against Bangladesh and New Zealand and was seen bowling full tilt before the start of the domestic season in August.
But he suffered from a knee problem while doing rehab at BCCI’s excellence centre, which forced the board to take a more cautious approach. After recovering from the injury, Shami played for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, taking 16 wickets combined.
Since his return to domestic cricket, He was monitored by Nitin Patel, the Centre of Excellence’s head of sports science. The team, headed by Patel, has been travelling around the country to monitor him and inform the management of his progress.
‘There have been some complaints about Shami’s knee’: Rohit Sharma
Rohit Sharma has said after the Brisbane Test that Shami was being troubled by swelling in his knee. The Indian captain further added that he understands that Shami is playing a lot of domestic cricket but there were some complaints about his knee and the management doesn’t want the player to come to Australia and get injured again.
“There is no way we want to take that chance unless we are like, not 100%, 200% sure, we’re not going to take any risk. But yeah, like I said in the last press conference, the door is open if those guys at the NCA feel that he is okay to go and recover and play, we’ll be happy to have him.” Rohit Sharma added.
India fast bowler Mohammed Shami’s international comeback hopes took a massive hit as the pacer was sidelined from Bengal’s Vijay Hazare Trophy opener against Delhi. Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
