New Delhi: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper MS Dhoni once again remained coy about his future and came up with a witty response when asked if he will be back playing for the five-time champions once again next season. It was Danny Morrison on the other side, and the commentator once again posed the big question to Dhoni about his IPL future as the CSK skipper arrived for the toss ahead of his side’s clash against Punjab Kings (PBKS) in IPL 2025 on Wednesday.
Dhoni, who is leading CSK in the absence of regular skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, is in the final lap of his cricketing career at 43. However, he remains one of the vital cogs in the CSK line-up and is still the guiding force in the team. Dhoni was retained as an uncapped player ahead of IPL 2025 for Rs 4 crore after the BCCI brought back the uncapped player rule for retired players.
In the past, Dhoni has given clear answers to Morrison when quizzed about his future, including his viral ‘definitely not’ response during IPL 2020. However, the CSK legend refused to give a clear picture on Wednesday, as he stumped the Kiwi broadcaster with a surprising response when asked if he would return for CSK next year.
“Does that mean you are going to come back for next year as well?” – Morrison asked Dhoni amid loud cheers from the crowd at the MA Chidambaram Stadium during the toss ahead of the match between CSK and PBKS. Dhoni told him he doesn’t know yet, but he is certainly coming for CSK’s next game this season.
“I don’t know, I don’t know. I am coming for the next game,” Dhoni told Morrison with a big smile.

Dhoni stepped down from captaincy last year and handed over the reins to Ruturaj Gaikwad ahead of IPL 2024. However, an injury to Gaikwad midway through the ongoing season forced Dhoni to return as captain for the five-time champions. CSK have struggled for consistency in IPL 2025 so far, with only two wins in nine matches this season.
CSK in need of a major revamp
CSK’s struggles in the ongoing IPL 2025 have left several cracks exposed in their squad. The five-time champions have massively underperformed as a batting unit, while also struggling in the field. Many have questioned CSK’s auction strategy, including their decision to buy the likes of Rahul Tripathi, Deepak Hooda and Vijay Shankar among others, who have failed to make an impact.
CSK are in a need of a complete revamp ahead of the new season and it remains to be seen if Dhoni would return again next season to help the team plot a comeback.
