Riyadh: Saudi Arabia is set to break records with the construction of a $50 billion megastructure, “The Mukaab,” in Riyadh. Planned as a futuristic city within a single structure, the Mukaab is designed to be among the world’s largest buildings, standing at an impressive 1,300 feet high and 1,200 feet across. “According to a recent report, it will have enough space to fit 20 Empire State Buildings inside.”

With a floor space spanning 2 million square metres, this colossal cube will feature residential units, hotels, office spaces, and an extensive range of retail, dining, and leisure facilities. The design of the Mukaab aligns with Saudi Arabia’s “Vision 2030” initiative led by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, aimed at reducing the nation’s dependency on oil, diversifying the economy, and fostering job growth. “The project aims to reduce Saudi Arabia’s dependence on oil, boost non-oil GDP by $51 billion, and create 334,000 jobs.”

All About The Mukaab: Saudi Arabia’s Grand Upcoming Building

The structure’s architecture and functionality set it apart. “Developers plan to integrate immersive, AI-driven technology to elevate the visitor experience.” With large-scale exterior screens similar to those on the Las Vegas Sphere, the Mukaab is expected to create dynamic visual displays, enhancing its aesthetic appeal. The word mukaab is an Arabic word that means “cube”, which reflects in the design of this gigantic building.

Architectural Inspiration and Cultural Touches

The Mukaab draws inspiration from Saudi Arabia’s cultural and architectural heritage. “The cube shape of the exterior reflects the Najdi architectural style, known for mud-brick structures and geometric window designs.” Desert-like landscapes around the structure will mimic “wadis,” or dry riverbeds, adding a natural touch to the ultramodern project. A promotional video released by Saudi authorities reveals a futuristic cityscape surrounding the Mukaab, complete with over 104,000 residential units, 9,000 hotel rooms, luxury retail outlets, office spaces, and community facilities.

Controversies and Criticisms

Despite its grand vision, the Mukaab has sparked controversy. “Some critics have expressed concerns over the structure’s resemblance to the Kaaba in Mecca, Islam’s holiest site.” Human rights organisations have raised further concerns, particularly over the potential exploitation of migrant labour and the risk of displacing local residents due to the project’s scale.

This ambitious undertaking marks a significant step in Saudi Arabia’s urban development and technological advancement, and as construction progresses, both its impact and the debates surrounding it will likely continue to shape public discourse.
