The left-arm pacer produced a fiery spell to run riot against the KKR batting line-up after MI won the toss and invited the visitors to bat first in the game at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Ashwani dismissed KKR skipper Ajinkya Rahane on 11 on his very first ball in the match to get off to a dream start.
He then picked up the important wickets of Rinku Singh, Manish Pander and Andre Russell to finish with excellent figures of 4/24 off his 3 overs and become the first Indian to take a four-wicket haul on his IPL debut. Ashwani broke the record held by Amit Singh to register the best figures by an Indian on his IPL debut. Amit finished with figures of 3/9 on his IPL debut for the Rajasthan Royals against Punjab Kings in 2009.
