New Delhi: The Irani Cup 2024 will be played between Mumbai and Rest of India (ROI) from October 1 to October 5. Started in the year 1960, the Irani Cup is an annual first-class match played between the reigning Ranji Trophy champions and players from other state association units.
Mumbai won the 2023-24 Ranji Trophy, which was their 42nd title in the premier red-ball domestic competition. Ajinka Rahane will lead the Mumbai team, while Maharashtra’s Ruturaj Gaikwad was named the captain of the ROI team.
The Irani Cup is played across five days and is only a one-off fixture. All the rules applicable to Test cricket are used in the Indian domestic competition. This will be the 61st edition of the Irani Cup fixture. The ROI team has won the last two editions, but Mumbai has the onus to break the streak of a Ranji Trophy champion’s drought in the tournament. Vidarbha was the last Ranji winner to win Irani Cup in 2019.
Mumbai will be bolstered with middle order batter Sarfaraz Khan being released by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) from India’s squad for the ongoing two-match Test series against Bangladesh. Similarly, the Indian cricket board also released Uttar Pradesh players Dhruv Jurel and Yash Dayal from the India camp to join the ROI squad in Lucknow.
Mumbai won’t have the services of youngster Musheer Khan, brother of Sarfaraz, after he went through a road accident and subsequently suffered a fracture in the neck region. The 19-year-old Mumbai batter was ruled out of the Irani Cup clash.
