New Delhi: Pat Cummins took centerstage with a hat-trick as Australia cruised to victory over Bangladesh by 28 runs (DLS Method) in the T20 World Cup 2024 Super Eight Group 1 match at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua on Thursday. It was the first hat-trick of the ongoing T20 showpiece and the seventh overall in the history of the tournament. Cummins’ three-fer was spread across two overs in the death overs
It was just the second hat-trick by an Australian in T20 World Cups as Brett Lee had achieved the feat back in 2007, the inaugural edition of the event. Apart from the two Aussies, Curtis Campher, Wanindu Hasaranga, Kagiso Rabada, Karthik Meiyappan, and Josh Little are the other bowlers to have registered hat-tricks at the marquee event.

How did Cummins do it?
Cummins went wicketless in the first spell and only claimed his hat-trick across the 18th and 20th over. On the fifth ball of the 18th over, he got Mahmudullah’s inside edge with a short-of-a-length delivery to rattle his stumps. The next ball was also a back-of-a-length ball from outside the off stump which Mahedi Hasan tried upper cutting but holed it out to Adam Zampa at the deep third man.
Cummins was on a hat-trick when he came to bowl the final over of the innings. He started with a slower one from outside off against the set batter Towhid Hridoy who scooped the ball to short fine leg. It made Hridoy depart for 40 off 28 balls while for Mahmudullah, it was the sixth time that he was a victim in a hat-trick in international cricket. Cummins’ three wickets and Adam Zampa’s two scalps helped Australia limit Bangladesh to 140/8 in 20 overs.

Australia beat Bangladesh by 28 runs (DLS Method)
In what was a rain-curtailed game that saw interruptions after a few minutes of play at regular interval, Australia cruised past Bangladesh by 28 runs via the DLS method and registered their first Super 8 win. While they looked comfortable chasing the 141-run target with a bright start from the openers David Warner and Travis Head, rain got the players run in and out frequently. Warner struck an unbeaten fifty and Head scored 31 as rain had the final say and Australia continued their winning run in the showpiece event.
Pat Cummins became just the second Australian after Brett Lee to bag a hat-trick in T20 World Cups and the seventh overall in the tournament’s history. Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
