Washington: Former US President Donald Trump narrowly escaped an assassination attempt on Saturday when a shooter fired three rounds at him during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, just days before he was set to accept the Republican Party’s presidential nomination in November. The gunshot wounded his right ear, and he was quickly taken to a hospital. A day after the assassination attempt, the New York Times published an opinion piece that has been criticised by billionaire Elon Musk.
Taking to X, Musk shared a picture of the Sunday Opinion page of The New York Times and wrote, “The New York Times just published this about Trump today. They are truly callous and despicable human beings. Not a shred of empathy.” The opinion page read, “He failed the tests of leadership and betrayed America. Voters must reject him in November.”
On Sunday, Musk revealed that he had faced two assassination attempts in the past eight months. In a post, Musk stated, “Dangerous times ahead. Two people (on separate occasions) have already tried to kill me in the past 8 months. They were arrested with guns about 20 minutes’ drive from Tesla HQ in Texas.”
Musk also endorsed Trump for President by donating to his campaign and saying, “The last time America had a candidate this tough was Theodore Roosevelt.”
After endorsing Trump on Saturday, Musk questioned the Secret Service’s failure to prevent the attack. In a post on X, he promoted the unfounded claim that the agency had allowed it to happen.
“Extreme incompetence or it was deliberate,” he wrote on X. “Either way, the SS leadership must resign.”
Earlier in 2022, Musk alleged that the media were disclosing his “assassination coordinates” by discussing his real-time location. Journalists used publicly accessible flight logs to publish and display the whereabouts of Musk’s private jet. As a result, Musk’s company, X, suspended their accounts.
Donald Trump Assassination Bid
A shooting at Donald Trump ’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania is being investigated as an attempted assassination of the former president and presumptive Republican nominee, law enforcement officials say.
The former president was showing off a chart of border-crossing numbers when at least five shots were fired. Trump was seen holding his ear and got down on the ground. Agents quickly huddled in a shield around him. When he stood, his face bloodied, he pumped his fist to cheering supporters as he was whisked off stage by Secret Service agents.
Trump called Sunday for unity and resilience as shocked leaders across the political divide reacted to the shooting.
The Secret Service said it killed the suspected shooter, who attacked from a rooftop of a nearby building outside the rally venue.
