Mumbai: Naada Habba,’ meaning ‘State Festival’ or ‘Festival of the Land,’ refers to Karnataka’s splendid Mysuru Dasara, celebrated annually in the historic city of Mysuru. This festival, rich in cultural and religious heritage, represents the victory of good over evil, paying homage to Goddess Chamundeshwari, who is believed to have defeated the demon Mahishasura on Vijayadashami. Known for its royal processions, cultural programs, and colourful traditions, Mysuru Dasara draws visitors from across the globe.
This 10-day festival concludes on Vijayadashami, which will be celebrated on Saturday, October 12, 2024. The festivities began on Thursday, October 3, 2024, with a puja for Goddess Chamundeshwari at Chamundi Hill.
The festival’s highlights include the grand Gajapade procession, dazzling lights, and lively cultural performances that captivate all the senses. Mysuru Dasara Gajapade 2024 is a spectacular event, upholding the cherished traditions of the Mysore Dasara.
The Gajapade, or elephant procession, is the centrepiece of the celebration. Magnificent elephants, adorned in bright colours and golden howdahs, will parade through Mysuru, led by the revered howdah elephant bearing the idol of Goddess Chamundeshwari. This impressive procession symbolises the triumph of good over evil, drawing thousands of visitors across India and worldwide.
Over the nine-day celebration, special rituals are performed on Chamundi Hill, culminating on Vijayadashami with the Vajramushti Kalaga and Nandi Dhwaja Puja held at the palace grounds. After floral offerings are made to the goddess in the howdah, the Jamboo Savari procession begins, drawing crowds eager to witness this grand spectacle.
The Jamboo Savari, the final day’s grand procession, features richly adorned elephants, folk performances, and royal customs. Starting at the Mysore Palace and concluding at Bannimantap, the procession is followed by the Torchlight Parade, a breathtaking display that brings the celebrations to a stunning close.
Mysuru Dasara celebrations in 2024
The Dasara festivities in Mysuru have commenced, ushering in 10 days of lively celebrations. Distinguished scholar and writer Hampa Nagarajaiah inaugurated the event with traditional rituals at the Chamundeshwari temple on Chamundi Hills, underscoring the cultural importance of Dasara, celebrated throughout Karnataka.
During Dasara, Mysore transforms into a lively centre of activity. The festival features a Food Festival, Sports and Yoga events, and various cultural programs that attract large crowds. At Doddakere Maidana, the Dasara Exhibition showcases initiatives from both government and private sectors, supporting business and industrial growth.
The Mysore Palace, illuminated by over 25,000 lights, has become a major attraction, drawing in lakhs of tourists to admire its grandeur.
According to reports, this year’s Dasara promises a captivating lineup of events, with over 6,500 artists from all parts of Karnataka showcasing their skills. Mysuru’s streets will come alive with music, dance, and various performances, while the historic palace shines brilliantly with decorative lights.
