New Delhi: Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan (SRK), who is well-known as the co-owner of the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), is an ardent fan of MS Dhoni himself and has made several statements on how desperately he wants him on his side in the cash-rich league. Both icons have become veterans in their respective fields and are often discussed when talking about calling it quits.
Recently on a television award show, which SRK co-hosted with his industry friends like fellow actor Vicky Kaushal and his longtime friend director Karan Johar, he drew a parallel between him and Dhoni while joking about retirement with Johar. The video of the same has gone viral on the internet and fans are loving King Khan for his wit and charm over a topic like retirement.
SRK said that legends very well know when to retire as he quoted a few names from sports to which Johar asked why hasn’t he taken the call so far. This is when SRK compared himself with Dhoni with a witty remark.
“The biggest thing about legends… unki khasiyat ye hoti hai ki legends ko maalum hota hai (legends have this speciality that they know), when to stop, when to retire. Like the great Sachin Tendulkar, like Sunil Chhetri—the footballer, like Roger Federer—the great tennis star. They all know when to retire, and I think it’s time you did too. So please go back. Thank you very much,” Khan joked with Johar.
“By that standard, aur us hisab se aap kyon retire nahi hote (Why don’t you get retired?),” Johar replied, to which Shah Rukh added, “Actually main doosre kisam ka legendary hoon. Main aur Dhoni ek kisam ke legends hai. Na na kar ke bhi 10 baar IPL khel jaate hai (I’m a different kind of legendary. Me and Dhoni are pretty same as we play the IPL 10 times even after keep saying no.)
Here’s the video of the moment –

Karan Johar – so why don’t you retire

MSD and IPL
MS Dhoni has featured in all 17 editions of the IPL held so far and is arguably one of the best captains not just in the cash-rich league but internationally as well. Under his leadership, CSK lifted the title five times which is joint most in the tournament’s history.
The BCCI on Saturday released the new set of player retention rules for IPL 2025 ahead of its mega-auction. The rules were highly anticipated by the die-hard Dhoni fans because of their impact on the legendary and whether he would be able to play the next season or not. The discussion was regarding Dhoni being considered as an uncapped player, which ultimately had become the case with the release of the rules.
The IPL governing council has announced that if a capped “Indian” player has not played in the starting XI in international cricket (Test matches, ODIs, T20 Internationals) in the last five calendar years preceding the year in which the relevant season is held or does not have a central contract with the BCCI, he will be considered as uncapped.
If Dhoni decides to play tge next IPL season, he will see a major pay cut for the uncapped tag. It remains to be seen if he makes himself available for the next season, although it is quite clear that he would be one of the “six” retentions of Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
