Mumbai: This year, Nag Panchami will be celebrated on Friday, August 9, 2024. On this auspicious day, families across India will honour the serpent deity by performing rituals and offerings at home. Rooted in ancient Hindu traditions, Nag Panchami is believed to bring prosperity and fulfil desires when the serpent deities are worshipped.
Origins of Nag Panchami
The origins of Nag Panchami are deeply intertwined with Hindu mythology. According to the Bhavishya Purana, the festival’s roots trace back to the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan). During this event, serpents disobeyed their mother and were cursed to be consumed by fire in Janamejaya’s Yajna. As the Mahabharata era unfolded, large serpents began to burn in the sacrificial flames.
Desperate, the serpents sought Brahma’s assistance. Brahma advised them that Astika, the son of sage Jaratkaru, would rescue them. Following Brahma’s guidance, Astika Muni intervened on the Panchami day of the Sawan month by pouring milk over the serpents, saving them from the flames. This act is commemorated annually with the festival of Nag Panchami.
The Serpents’ Role in Samudra Manthan
Another significant legend connects Nag Panchami to the Samudra Manthan. During this cosmic churning, the serpent Vasuki was used as a rope. The gods held Vasuki’s tail while the demons held his head. The churning first produced poison, which Lord Shiva consumed to protect the universe. When the nectar (amrit) emerged, the gods drank it, attaining immortality. This miraculous event is also commemorated through the celebration of Nag Panchami.
Lord Krishna and the Serpent of Vrindavan
Another popular story involves Lord Krishna, who is said to have saved the people of Vrindavan from a serpent on the Panchami of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Shravan. Krishna danced on the serpent’s hood, earning him the name Nathaiya. This tale reinforces the tradition of serpent worship during Nag Panchami.
As Nag Panchami approaches, devotees prepare to honour the serpent deities, celebrating a tradition that blends reverence, mythology, and cultural practices spanning centuries.
