New Delhi: Hobart Hurricanes thrashed Sydney Thunder by seven wickets in the final to win the Big Bash League (BBL) 2024-25 title. Hurricanes rode on a sensational century from opener Mitchell Owen to chase down the target of 183 runs with 5.5 overs to spare in the final and lift their maiden BBL title. Owen slammed the joint-fastest ton in BBL history off just 39 deliveries and finished with 108 off just 42 balls studded with 11 sixes and 6 fours.
Owen enjoyed a breakout season for the Hurricanes after being promoted as an opener as he finished on top of the run-scoring charts in BBL 2024-25 with 452 runs from 11 matches at an impressive strike rate of 203.60. While Owen didn’t register in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction last year and is not going to be part of IPL 2025, several IPL stars were in action during the recently concluded BBL season.
The likes of Nathan Ellis, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis and Jacob Bethell among others, who stole the limelight at the IPL 2025 mega auction last year, were part of BBL 2024-25. While Ellis will turn up for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in IPL 2025, Stoinis and Maxwell will play for Punjab Kings. England’s rising star Bethell was picked up by RCB and will head into the new season of IPL with high expectations from him.
Here is a look at how IPL stars fared in BBL 2024-25:
1) Glenn Maxwell (Punjab Kings)
Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell was in fine form for Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League 2024-25 and played a key role in helping them make it to the knockout stage. Maxwell hammered 325 runs in 9 matches at an excellent strike rate of over 186, including three half-centuries to finish as the highest run-getter for his team and the 4th-highest run-getter in the tournament, overall.
Maxwell was picked up by Punjab Kings for a sum of Rs 4 crore at the IPL 2025 mega auction and his form augurs well for the franchise ahead of the new season. The Aussie all-rounder’s inconsistencies have troubled him in the IPL in the past but Maxwell will hope to continue his purple patch for Punjab Kings in the new season.
2) Marcus Stoinis (Punjab Kings)
Marcus Stoinis led Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League 2024-25 and enjoyed a decent campaign with the bat. The Australian all-rounder scored 311 runs in 11 matches at a strike rate of 124.40 with a solitary half-century. He also picked up 5 wickets for his team and was one of the stand-out performers for the Stars.
Stoinis was bought by Punjab Kings for a huge sum of Rs 11 crore at the IPL 2025 auction and will be a crucial player for the franchise under new head coach Ricky Ponting. Like Maxwell, Stoinis has been part of the Punjab Kings setup before and will be hoping to play his part in helping the Shreyas Iyer-led side win their maiden IPL title.
3) Jacob Bethell (Royal Challengers Bengaluru)
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) signed England’s rising star Jacob Bethell for Rs 2.60 crore at the IPL 2025 auction last year. Bethell was in action for Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League (BBL) 2024-25 and failed to impress with the bat. The England batter managed only 195 runs in 8 innings at a strike rate of 125, including a single century.
4) Nathan Ellis (Chennai Super Kings)
Australian pacer Nathan Ellis was picked up by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at his base price of Rs 2 crore in the IPL 2025 mega auction last year. Ellis led Hobart Hurricanes to their maiden title in the Big Bash League 2024-25. He led from the front in the final with a brilliant spell of 3/23 off his 4 overs. Ellis picked up 13 wickets in 10 matches at an economy rate of 7.86.
5) Tim David (Royal Challengers Bengaluru)
Australian all-rounder Tim David will be turning up for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in IPL 2025 after being released by Mumbai Indians. David was in action for Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash League 2024-25. He notched up 254 runs for the champions in 9 innings at a strike rate close to 180, including two half-centuries.
6) Jake Fraser-McGurk (Delhi Capitals)
Big-hitting Jake Fraser McGurk’s woeful run continued in the Big Bash League as he is yet to regain the form he displayed for the Delhi Capitals in his maiden IPL season last year. McGurk, who was resigned by DC for Rs 9 crore at the mega auction last year, scored only 188 runs in 10 innings for the Melbourne Renegades in the BBL and failed to make an impact.
Nathan Ellis-led Hobart Hurricanes defeated Sydney Thunder in the final to win the Big Bash League (BBL) 2024-25 title on Monday. Ellis will play for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in IPL 2025.
