‘Nation’s greatest cricketing moment’: Cricket fraternity reacts as South Africa end 27-year ICC title drought

New Delhi: South Africa defeated Australia by 5 wickets in the World Test Championship final (WTC) at Lord’s in London on Saturday, June 14. Temba Bavuma has created history, becoming the first South African skipper to lift an ICC trophy since 1998.

Chasing the 282-run target, Mitchell Starc picked up two early wickets, dismissing Ryan Rickelton and Wiaan Mulder to put Australia on top, but Aiden Markram and Bavuma stitched a sensational 147-run partnership for the third wicket and helped the team lift their maiden ICC World Test Championship title. Markram scored 136 runs off 207 balls with the help of 14 boundaries, while skipper Bavuma amassed 66 runs off 134 balls in the summit clash.

After winning the toss, South Africa took full advantage of the overcast conditions and bowled Australia out for 212 runs. Steve Smith scored 66 runs off 112 balls, and Webster also amassed 72 runs off 92 balls. Kagiso Rabada picked up five wickets while Jansen also took three wickets in the first innings. The Proteas’ batting line-up struggled against the Australian bowling line-up as they were bundled out for 138 runs. Cummins led the team from the front and picked up six wickets.

28 wickets fell on the first two days of the ultimate Test, but the conditions became more favourable for batters on day 3 as both Markram and Bavuma showed great determination against the Aussies. Cummins rotated his bowler to break the partnership between two experienced batters, but they remained unmoved. The Proteas needed just 69 runs to win their maiden WTC title on day four, and they scripted history with five wickets in hand.
