New Delhi: India’s Golden Boy Neeraj Chopra failed to breach the 90m mark in the men’s javelin throw event at the Janusz Kusocinski Memorial in Poland on Friday, May 23. Fresh from breaching the 90m mark for the first time in his career at the Doha Diamond League last week, Neeraj was looking to replicate his heroics in Poland. However, he fell significantly short of the 90m mark.
In what was a disappointing night for the two-time Olympic medallist, Neeraj had to dig deep to finish second with his best throw of 84.14m in his final sixth attempt. He once again finished behind Germany’s Julian Weber, who took the top spot in the standings at the Janusz Kusocinski Memorial with an 86.12m throw in his third attempt.
On a cold evening with overcast conditions in Poland’s Chorzow, Neeraj got off to a dismal start as he fouled twice in his first three throws after below-par efforts. The reigning world champion managed to do enough with his final throw in the end to pip Grenada’s Anderson Peters to take the second spot in the standings, maintaining his top-two finish streak since the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.
A disappointing night for Neeraj Chopra
Neeraj started with a poor throw of 75m in his first attempt and fouled as he was disappointed with his effort. He threw 81.28m in his second attempt to get on the board before stepping out again to foul in the third attempt after another poor throw. Neeraj’s throw was once again less than 80m in the fourth round as the Indian fouled again, intentionally.
Neeraj was left with only one valid throw in his first four attempts, but held the third spot on the standings, behind Weber and Peters, who too endured an underwhelming night in Poland. Neeraj threw 81.80m in his fifth attempt before recording an 84.14m throw – his best of the night, in his final attempt to take the second spot.
Neeraj looked completely frustrated and unhappy after his first three attempts, and there were few signs of satisfaction even after he managed to grab the second spot with his best effort of 84.14 in his final throw of the night. And rightfully show, as Neeraj would have hoped to build on his 90.23m throw at the Doha Diamond League 2025.
India’s javelin superstar Neeraj Chopra finished 2nd at the Janusz Kusocinski Memorial in Poland with his best effort of 84.14m in his final sixth attempt.
