New Delhi: Neeraj Chopra was included in Athletics Federation of India’s athletes commission that would be headed by long-jump great Anju Bobby George, it was announced on Wednesday.
Tokyo Olympics gold medal winning javeline thrower Chopra would be among three males in a nine-member panel.
Runners Jyotirmoyee Sikdar, Sunita Rani, discus thrower Krishna Poonia, hurdler MD Valsamma, steeplechaser Sudha Singh are the new members in the panel.
Apart from Chopra, 3000m steeplechaser Avinash Sable and new AFI president Bahadur Singh Sagoo, shot put gold medallist at 2002 Asian Games, were the other male members.
Sagoo, who chaired the previous commission that had four female members, made way for senior AFI vice president George, who claimed bronze at the 2003 world championships.
Change after AFI elections
The changes in make-up of the athletes commission were needed after AFI conducted elections in October of last year. Chopra was among four members nominated by AFI’s new executive council.
Outgoing AFI president Adille Sumariwalla remained in the AFI fold as an executive council member since he is part of the World Athletics Council.
Sumariwalla had been at the helm of AFI for three consecutive terms since 2012 and is also an executive board member of World Athletics.
“We amended the AFI constitution last year to the effect that any person who is in the World Athletics council will be an ex-officio member of the AFI executive council,” AFI’s planning commission chairman Lalit Bhanot said at AFI’s annual general body meeting.
The AFI also announced that the Federation Cup would be held in Kozhikode from April 21-24 after Panchkula expressed inability, having conducted the National Inter-State Championships in June last year.
Chennai would host this year’s National Inter-State Senior Championships from August 20 to 24 and the National Open Championships will be staged in Ranchi from September 27 to 30.
