NEVER overlook swollen hands and feet; doctors say it is a sign of a deadly disease

New Delhi: Swollen hands and feet are often said to be side effects of excessive salt intake and water retention. But there is a lot more to it than what one knows – turns out, it could be an early symptom of a potentially deadly condition. Although the same is also likely to occur when the weather is warm, doctors say that myocarditis could also be a possibility. However, in most cases, patients do not get diagnosed for the same, only to make matters worse later. But what is myocarditis? Read on to find out.

What is myocarditis?

Myocarditis is a condition characterised by inflammation of the heart muscles. This reduces the heart’s ability to pump blood effectively over time. It results in abnormal heart rhythm which is largely neglected. The symptoms of this condition are either too subtle to notice or are not there at all. However, if left untreated, it can raise the risk of death.

What are the symptoms of myocarditis?

Myocarditis can affect anyone at any age, but it is often related to viral infections. but it can be caused by autoimmune disorders, medication, and bacterial infections as well. The symptoms of myocarditis are:

Palpitations
Fever
Difficulty in breathing
Chest pain
Unusual tiredness
Dizziness
Lightheadedness
Swelling in the legs, hands, ankles, feet
Body ache
Sore throat

A study found that most patients do not even know what myocarditis is, let alone noticing the symptoms. This condition is mostly undiagnosed and can occur at any age in association with viral infections, COVID-19, or the flu. In the case of Covid, the virus can leave the body but immunity may overreact leading to inflammation that may linger on in the heart. Other causes of this condition are:

Toxins
Autoimmune disorders
Bacterial infections
Medication

Doctors stress the need for timely detection and treatment to lower the risk of long-term complications.
