New Delhi: Eoin Morgan has categorically said he is not in line to replace Matthew Mott as England’s next white-ball coach.
Mott is under pressure to keep his job after England failed to defend their ODI and T20 World Cup titles in India and the Caribbean, respectively.
England failed to advance to the semi-finals of the ODI World Cup last year while they were beaten by India in the last four stage of the T20 World Cup last month.
It prompted reports in British media suggesting that Mott would leave and Eng;and have sent feelers to potential candidates. Morgan is one of the candiated who have been linked to the job but he has now shot down them down.
“This news is actually news to me,” he told Sky Sports while commentating on the ongoing The Hundred. “It’s obviously not nice when a coach comes under fire and there is a lot of speculation about his future, but only time will tell what will happen.”
However the former England skipper admitted of his interest to coach the team in the future but felt its time has not come as he has a young family and wants to focus on it apart from enjoying his commentary stint.
“I’ve been asked a lot [in the media] over the past couple of months about the role, and if I would take it on,” Morgan said.
“My answer has simply been that the timing for everything in my life at the moment is not right. Yes, I want to coach down the line. But I have a young family, and I spend a lot more time at home and watching cricket doing this [commentary]. I’m absolutely loving what I’m doing.”
England Cricket’s managing director Rob Key had earlier said they would review the team’s performance in the T20 World Cup, adding to the pressure on Mott and 20-over format captain, who is currently down with a calf injury.
