New Delhi: World no.1 Aryna Sabalenka smashed her racquet into pieces and was left completely devastated after she lost to USA’s Madison Keys in the women’s singles final at the Australian Open 2025 on Saturday, January 25. Keys stunned Sabalenka at the Rod Laver Arena to lift her maiden Australian Open title and win the first Grand Slam crown of her career.
Despite Keys’ thrilling win over world no.2 Iga Swiatek in the semi-final, Sabalenka started as somewhat favourite with many expecting her to lift her third consecutive Australian Open title after she beat a spirited Paula Badosa in the semi-final. However, Keys capped off a dream run with the ultimate crown as she won 3-6, 6-2, 5-7 in the final to clinch a historic maiden title.
A furious Sabalenka was spotted smashing her racquet on the court after her loss in the final before hiding her face under a towel as she broke down in tears. The Belarusian had her face covered as she wept under the towel. Keys, on the other hand, shed tears of joy as she shared an emotional hug with her husband and the rest of her team after her victory.

Sabalenka, the defending champion, was aiming to win her third Australian Open title on the trot after winning the last two editions of the Grand Slam in 2023 and 2024. She was arguably the favourite heading into the clash against Keys but failed to outlast the American, who played some of the best tennis of her career to win her first major title.
