Mumbai: In the Hindu calendar, Nirjala Ekadashi is considered one of the most powerful and spiritually rewarding fasts of the year. Known for its intense discipline, this vrat (fast) is observed during the Ekadashi tithi of Shukla Paksha in the month of Jyeshtha, and true to its name — nirjala, meaning ‘without water’ — devotees refrain from consuming even a single drop of water throughout the day. It is believed that observing this fast earns the same spiritual merit as all 24 Ekadashis of the year combined.

This fast holds immense significance in Hinduism not just for its austerity but for its purifying effects on both body and soul. From performing early morning prayers to offering charity and chanting Vishnu mantras, the day is packed with rituals that elevate one’s spiritual practice. Here’s everything you need to know about the date, rituals, and do’s and don’ts for Nirjala Ekadashi 2025.

When is Nirjala Ekadashi in 2025?

According to the Hindu Panchang, Nirjala Ekadashi begins at 2:15 AM on 6 June 2025 and ends at 4:47 AM on 7 June 2025. Since the fast is observed based on the sunrise timing (Udaya tithi), it will be observed on Friday, 6 June 2025.

What to Do on Nirjala Ekadashi?

1. Worship Lord Vishnu Early in the Morning

Take a bath during Brahma Muhurat and meditate on Lord Vishnu.

2. Take a Vow (Sankalp)

Begin your fast by taking a pledge in front of Lord Vishnu with full devotion.

3. Follow the Puja Rituals

Wear yellow clothes and worship Shri Hari Vishnu using yellow flowers, tulsi leaves, panchamrit (holy mixture), incense, and lamps.

4. Chant Vishnu Sahasranama

Reciting Vishnu Sahasranama, mantras, bhajans, or passages from the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita is considered highly beneficial.

5. Donate Generously

Offer clothes, water, fruits, food, umbrellas, sherbet, and hand fans to the needy and to Brahmins.

6. Avoid Water Consumption

As per tradition, the vrat is strictly nirjala — meaning even water must be avoided unless medically advised otherwise.

7. Stay Awake at Night

If possible, engage in devotional activities such as bhajan-kirtan and reading Lord Vishnu’s stories through the night.

What Not to Do on Nirjala Ekadashi

  • Avoid Food and Water: Consuming water or food breaks the sanctity of this fast.
  • Steer Clear of Anger and Falsehood: Maintain purity in speech and conduct.
  • Do Not Sleep on a Bed: Sleeping on the floor is considered spiritually favourable.
  • Avoid Negative Thoughts: Maintain purity in mind, speech, and actions.
  • Do Not Consume Garlic, Onion, Meat or Alcohol: These tamasic items are forbidden during any Ekadashi vrat.

Why is Nirjala Ekadashi Important?

Nirjala Ekadashi is believed to bring the combined merit of all other Ekadashis in the year. It cleanses one of past sins, aids in attaining moksha (liberation), and is deeply revered in scriptures. Legend says that Bhima, one of the Pandava brothers, who found it difficult to fast on all other Ekadashis, observed just this one and gained the virtue of all. Hence, it’s also known as Bhimseni Ekadashi. Spiritually, it is seen as a path toward both mental discipline and divine grace.
