Mumbai: In Hinduism, Nirjala Ekadashi is a day dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the sustainer of the universe. Each month has two Ekadashi dates, making a total of 24 in a year. Nirjala Ekadashi falls on the Shukla Paksha of the Jyeshtha month and is considered one of the most powerful and significant Ekadashis of the year. ‘Nirjala’ means “without water” because devotees fast on this day without consuming food or water.

According to religious beliefs, the Nirjala Ekadashi fast confers the merit of observing all 24 Ekadashis in a year. This fast is considered to be the most rigorous of all the Ekadashi fasts and is considered highly auspicious.

On Nirjala Ekadashi, devotees worship Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. In order to be free from sins, one must follow the prescribed rituals of Nirjala Ekadashi. By fasting on Nirjala Ekadashi only, the merits gained by observing all Ekadashis in one year are attained.
