New Delhi: Indian wrestler Nisha Dahiya’s campaign at the Paris Olympics 2024 ended heartbreakingly after an injury led her to defeat against North Korea’s Pak Sol-gum in the quarter-final of the women’s 68kg freestyle category. Dahiya looked all but set to win the quarter-final bout but was left in tears after incurring a freak injury to her hand and fingers in the dying moments of the match.
Nisha was leading 8-1 against the North Korean wrestler and was on the cusp of reaching the semi-final in her maiden appearance at the Olympics. However, she was left in tears and agonising pain after injuring her shoulder and fingers. The Indian was quickly attended to by the physios during the game and decided to continue despite being left with broken fingers.
However, she couldn’t manage to hold on to her massive lead despite less than a minute left on the clock as the North Korean Pak eventually won the quarter-final 10-8 to reach the semi-finals. Nisha was inconsolable after the defeat and wept continuously. Her coach Virender Dahiya was furious as he slammed the North Korean wrestler and her coach’s tactics during the game.
It was 100 percent intentional: Nisha Dahiya’s coach
Dahiya made some shocking claims as he alleged Nisha was injured internationally by Pak during the game and that there were instructions from the North Korean bench to target her hand. Nisha’s coach’s alleged the injury robbed the Indian wrestler of a medal at the Paris Olympics as she was on the verge of victory.
“It was 100 percent intentional, they hurt her intentionally. We had seen, there was an instruction from the Korean corner. They attacked the joint. They have taken away the medal from her,” Virender Dahiya told PTI.
“The way Nisha had started, the medal was in her neck and it has been taken away. The attacks were clear, the counter-attack worked and the defence was compact. She had beaten the same wrestler at the Asian Qualifier, there was no way Nisha was losing this,” he added.
No repechage round for Nisha Dahiya
After the freak injury led to her defeat in the quarter-final against Pak, there was still some hope left for Nisha to get a medal by fighting for bronze in the repechage round. However, Pat needed to beat American Amit Elor for Nisha to be eligible for repechage. The North Korean was beaten 10-0 by the American as Nisha’s Olympic dream was left shattered.
However, even if Nisha qualified for the repechage round, there were still concerns about her participation after her shoulder injury.
