New Delhi: Australia suffered a shock defeat against Afghanistan in the Super Eight stage of the T20 World Cup 2024 on Sunday, June 23. The Mitchell Marsh-led side failed to chase down a target of 149 runs at the Arnos Vale Ground in St Vincent after suffering a terrible batting collapse. Australia will aim to bounce back when they take on Rohit Sharma-led India in their must-win final Super 8 clash on Monday, June 24.
Afghanistan scripted history as they earned their first-ever win against Australia in international cricket. Ahead of their final Super 8 tie against India, Australian skipper Mitchell Marsh fired a warning to Rohit & Co. stating that there is no better team to be in a must-win situation against than India. The Afghanistan defeat has put Australia on the brink of elimination as a slip-up against India will send them crashing from the tournament.
Afghanistan not only brought an end to Australia’s five-match unbeaten streak in the T20 World Cup 2024 but also delayed India’s qualification for the semi-finals. A win for Australia would have seen both India and the Aussies become the two teams from Group 1 to make it to the semi-finals. However, both India and Australia will now face each other in a must-win game on Monday.
Speaking at the post-match press conference after his team’s defeat, Australia captain Marsh said his team will be looking to move on quickly from the loss against Afghanistan and return to winning ways against India.
“(India next…) First and foremost it becomes clear for us. We need to win and no better team to do it against. Full credit to Afghanistan for tonight and we move on quickly,” Marsh said at the post-match presentation.
How can Australia qualify for semi-finals?
Australia currently have two points from two matches in Group 1 and are involved in a three-way battle with India and Afghanistan for a spot in the top two. They need to beat India at all costs in their final league game to make it to the semi-finals. India need to avoid a defeat by 41 or more runs to ensure they confirm their berth in the final four.
The match between India and Australia will be played at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in St Lucia on Monday.
