No R Ashwin at CSK next season? Spinner responds after fan tells him to leave franchise

New Delhi: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) spinner R Ashwin recently responded to a fan who asked him to leave the franchise after their disastrous campaign in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. The five-time champions finished at the bottom of the table after managing only four wins from 14 matches in IPL 2025, in what was their worst-ever campaign in the tournament’s history.

Ashwin was among the big names who failed to impress throughout the season as the veteran spinner failed to pick up wickets regularly and was taken to the cleaners by most teams. The senior off-spinner, who returned to CSK after being bought for Rs 9.75 crore at the IPL 2025 mega auction, managed only seven wickets in 9 matches for the team at an economy of 9.12.

Recently, during a live session on his YouTube channel, a fan asked Ashwin to leave Chennai Super Kings ahead of the next season. “Hi dear Ashwin, with lots of love, please leave my lovely CSK family,” the fan wrote. Ashwin sympathised with the fan and agreed with his sentiments. Ashwin agreed it was a poor season for the team, but insisted he wouldn’t let the learnings go to waste.

“One thing that I can relate to is his love for the franchise. Let’s not make one mistake. When you say something, please make sure that you’re doing it in your best interest. I understand what you’re trying to say. I also have the same love and interest. Don’t think that I’m going to let this campaign go to waste. What I have in my control. If you give the ball in my hand, I will bowl, if you give bat, then I will bat,” said Ashwin, responding to the fan.

The 38-year-old also agreed that his Powerplay bowling was not up to the mark this season, and he made mistakes which ended up costing the team. Ashwin was dropped from the team for several games after MS Dhoni took over captaincy from an injured Ruturaj Gaikwad midway through the season. However, his performances barely improved when he returned to the XI.

“I have put in a lot of hard work, and there are areas which I can work on, which I know very clearly. In the powerplay, I have given away many runs. To bowl in the powerplay, I have to create more options next year. This is the best I can do,” Ashwin added.

Will R Ashwin leave CSK next season?

Though he admitted his mistakes and made it clear his bowling was far from impressive for CSK in IPL 2025, Ashwin decided to remain coy on his future. CSK fans have continuously voiced their opinion on the veteran spinner’s poor show this season, and many want the franchise to release him to free up a huge sum of Rs 9.75 crore for the IPL 2026 player auction.

CSK will head into the auction looking for a major rebuild as the franchise is expected to release a number of players after a forgettable campaign. The likes of Rahul Tripathi, Deepak Hooda, Ashwin, Vijay Shankar and Rachin Ravindra, among others, might be released by the franchise to make way for other reinforcements in the auction.
