Maya and Leah Tata, the daughters of Noel tata, who is the chairman of Tata Trusts, have joined the board of trustees of Sir Ratan Tata Industrial Institute (SRTII). This body works under the umbrella of Sir Ratan Tata Trust, which is one of the two main shareholders of Tata Sons, the group holding company.

Maya Tata (36) and Leah Tata (39) have replaced Arnaz Kotwal and Freddy Talati. The latest move has put the children of Noel Tata on the boards of the smaller Tata Trusts. According to reports, Maya Tata and Leah Tata haven’t yet been inducted on Sir Ratan Tata Trust and Allied Trusts, and Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and Allied Trusts, which are two key bodies. Neville (32) is the other child of Noel Tata.

Rift in the trustees

The induction of Maya and Leah Tata has not gone down well with everyone. According to reports, Arnaz Kotwal, who stepped down dashed off a letter to other trustees venting her irritation at the way she was made to step down to accommodfate Noel Tata’s daughters. “Since I am now in Dubai and after considerable thought, I have acceded to Burjis’s request but was very saddened that none of you reached out to speak with me directly about this matter and I was blindsided by this communication from a virtual stranger under the direction of his CEO, Sidharth Sharma, both of whom have no nexus to SRTI,” she wrote to other trustees as reported in the media. Sidharth Sharma is the CEO of Tata Trusts while Burjis Taraporewala is an executive. Tata Trusts did not make any comments in the media.

SRTII works for generating income opportunities for women

Reports indicated that the decision to appoint Leah Tata and Maya Tata was adopted unanimously by the board. The trustees comprise Noel Tata, Vijay Singh, Venu Srinivasan, Darius Khambata, Jehangir H. Jehangir and Mehli Mistry. SRTII is now 97 years old and was set up in 1928. It was established by Lady Navajbai Tata and the Stri Zarthostri Mandal for generating employment for poor women. The institute is active in a range of activities related to generating women’s income such as cooking, tailoring, embroidery and Montessori teacher training units.
