New Delhi, India: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faced intense emotional backlash during a memorial event for the victims of the October 7 Hamas attacks. As he delivered his speech, audience members interrupted him, expressing their grief and frustration over the government’s handling of the ongoing hostage crisis.
One attendee shouted, “My father was killed,” highlighting the anguish felt by families of those still held captive by Hamas in Gaza. Many blame Netanyahu for perceived failures that allowed the Hamas attack to occur and for not securing the release of the remaining hostages.
Currently, 97 hostages are believed to be held by Hamas, with 34 confirmed deceased. The growing pressure on the Netanyahu administration comes as families and various international leaders urge Israel to pursue a truce and negotiate a hostage release deal.
In a separate development, Israeli intelligence chief David Barnea is set to visit Doha to engage in discussions regarding potential negotiations for hostage releases. The recent killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, viewed as a significant barrier to such negotiations, may facilitate talks.
Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant acknowledged that military action alone might not suffice to secure the hostages’ return. “Not all objectives can be achieved through military operations alone,” Gallant stated, suggesting that “painful concessions” may be necessary.
Netanyahu also addressed the recent Israeli airstrikes against Iranian military targets, claiming significant damage to Iran’s defense capabilities. He described the operations as “precise and powerful,” asserting that they met their strategic objectives.
