New Delhi: The Odisha Cricket Association (OCA) has been served a show-cause notice by the Odisha government after a floodlight failure during the 2nd ODI between India and England at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack on Sunday. The floodlight failure disrupted the game between the two sides, causing a delay of around 30 minutes during India’s 305-run chase.
The incident took place during the 7th over of India’s chase when openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill were going strong in the middle after getting the team off to a good start. The floodlights of one of the six towers at the stadium went off during India’s chase, forcing the umpires to stop the play. Though Indian skipper Rohit Sharma looked keen on continuing, the umpires went by the rule books to stop the play at the Barabati Stadium.
The incident left the fans furious both inside the stadium and outside on social media as many criticised the Odisha Cricket Association for the poor management at the venue. The incident also left BCCI and the Odisha government embarrassed as it was unacceptable that a floodlight malfunctioned during an international match.
“The Odisha Cricket Association is hereby directed to submit a detailed explanation for the cause of the disruption and identify the persons/agencies who were responsible for such lapses and outline the measures taken to prevent similar incidents in the future,” read a notice sent by Siddhartha Das, the director of sports, the government of Odisha to the Odisha Cricket Association.
The Odisha government has given OCA 10 days to submit their response and also identify the people or agencies responsible for the failure of the floodlight tower.
“The findings must be submitted within 10 days upon receipt of this letter. This incident led to a 30-minute suspension of the match, causing inconvenience to players and spectators,” the notice read further.
Rohit Sharma powers India to thumping victory
Rohit was batting on 29 when the floodlight failure took place at the Barabati Stadium. While the incident could have easily disrupted the Indian skipper’s rhythm, Rohit didn’t let the disruption affect him as he went on to notch up his 32nd ODI ton in dominant fashion. The Indian skipper hammered a blistering knock of 119 runs off 90 balls to power India to a 4-wicket win in the 2nd ODI.
Rohit combined with Gill to get India off to a flyer with a 136-run opening stand. While the Indian skipper slammed a ton, Gill notched up his second successive half-century en route to his 60-run knock off 52 balls. Shreyas Iyer (44) and Axar Patel, who scored an unbeaten 41 also made crucial contributions in India’s victory as the hosts clinched the three-match series with an unassailable 2-0 lead.
