Age is just a number: Michael Hussey opens up on MS Dhoni’s future amid CSK’s struggles

New Delhi: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batting coach Michael Hussey recently addressed the speculations regarding MS Dhoni’s future in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and said the legendary wicket-keeper is enjoying playing for the five-time champions. Hussey said age is just a number and that Dhoni is still contributing in many ways for CSK.

Dhoni has once again taken over the reins at CSK after regular skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out of the season due to an injury. Dhoni stepped down from CSK captaincy ahead of IPL 2024 last year and handed over the baton to Gaikwad. CSK got off to a horror start in IPL 2025 under Gaikwad’s leadership and lost four out of their first five matches before Dhoni took over again.

While he is leading the side again, Dhoni has also been sharp behind the wickets, pulling off some amazing stumpings and run-outs so far this season. He has also been in fine form with the bat lower down the order and has been playing the role of a finisher for the five-time champions. However, CSK continue to struggle in IPL 2025 as they remain at the bottom of the points table with just 4 points after 7 matches.

Ahead of CSK’s clash against arch-rivals Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on April 20, CSK batting coach Hussey spoke about Dhoni’s future and said he has managed his knee better this season compared to last season and has been enjoying his game for the team.

“He is doing okay. I actually think he is moving a bit better than he did last year. He has got more confidence in his knee. He is batting nicely, like he always does. He is still very quick behind the stumps. Did you see that run-out? That was incredible – to get that much accuracy and power while sliding all the way down the leg side – it was pretty amazing. Yeah, he is still doing it,” said Hussey.

“We all often say age is just a number, and he is still enjoying it. He is still contributing in a lot of ways. We are lucky to have him,” added the CSK batting coach.

CSK aim to spark a turnaround against Mumbai Indians

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are currently languishing at the 10th spot on the IPL 2025 points table with just two wins from seven matches and will be hoping to spark a turnaround with a win against their arch-rivals, Mumbai Indians, at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday. CSK brought an end to their five-match losing streak with a five-wicket win against Lucknow Super Giants in their last game.

They will be aiming to bag their second win in a row on Sunday to get to six points and move up in the points table. MI too have struggled for consistency so far this season with only three wins in their first seven matches.
