After trying to woo India for years, it looks like Elon Musk-led Tesla is not coming here at all, according to multiple reports. Now, a Bloomberg report cemented this belief further. With such talk acquiring momentum, Ola founder Bhavish Aggarwal took to his X account, which, by the way, is also owned by Musk, and posted a stinging rejoinder, “If true, this is Tesla’s loss, not India’s.” He had tagged Bloomberg report in his post.
Aggarwal also added that this step will cost Tesla dear whenever the company starts thinking about entering India again in the future. Aggarwal seems to imply that Tesla will have absolutely no choice but to try and enter India because of the massive opportunity it offers to EV makers. He added in his X post, “While the Indian EV and Lithium ecosystem is early, we’re gaining momentum quickly. It’ll be too late for Tesla when they look at India seriously again in a few years.”
Talks between Tesla representatives and the Indian government seem to have been put on the backburner ever since Musk dropped an official visit to India, during which he was to meet PM Narendra Modi, indicating multiple other assignments that required his personal interventions. However, thereafter, Musk found the time to go to China, India’s rival.
Tesla has been doing exceptionally badly in China over the last year and there was much talk of Musk looking to diversify his base and set up shop in India too. However, for that, Tesla was asking for a number of sops that the government was unwilling to provide to the extent demanded.
Notably, another US company, Apple, has successfully diversified its manufacturing by shifting base to an extent from China to India with CEO Tim Cook indicating that this market was very important and the company was here to stay.
