Old habits never die! Did Luis Suarez roll back the years with another bite attempt?

New Delhi: Columbia managed to secure a spot in the Copa America final for the first time in 23 years after winning 1-0 against Uruguay. They will now face the defending champions, Argentina, for Sunday’s clash.

The high-intensity game saw seven yellow cards and one red card. Soon after the match, all hell broke loose as both team players got engaged in heated altercations on the field. Darwin Nunez, along with fellow players, entered the stands as fans clashed. Nunez was even seen hitting Colombian fans with the stands.

A video of former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez’s antics has surfaced and is going viral. He was spotted towering over opponents and allegedly shoved someone from the Colombian coaching team.

Footage shows the Uruguay striker walking up to Miguel Borja of Colombia following the game and leaning towards his shoulders. Some suggest that he was attempting to bite the forward. Later, he walked towards James Rodriguez and had a word, which triggered all the scuffles that took place on the field.

Suarez has himself come forward to the media and said that the reason he and his players had gone towards the stand was to make sure their families were alright. He explained that the team’s families, including partners, children and elderly parents, were present for the big game and that the team had rushed to protect them. He also pointed out that the families of players were trapped whilst things were falling on them as the crowd became more and more uncivilised. He noted that the scenes were regrettable and wished there was no repeat of such incidents.

Suarez has previously made news for his attempt to bite a player. While playing at Ajax in 2010, he bit PSV’s Otman Bakkal on the shoulder, which earned him a seven-game suspension. He received a 10-match ban while at Liverpool for biting Chelsea’s Branislav before getting a four-month suspension by FIFA for biting Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini in 2014.

In the match, Jefferson Lerma scored the only goal in the 39th minute. Colombia will now face Lionel Messi’s Argentina, who won their semi-final draw against Canada 2-0.
