On This Day: When Yuvraj Singh took Stuart Broad to cleaners six times in a row!

New Delhi: Yuvraj Singh, a flamboyant Indian all-rounder, who used to grace the field with his explosive batting style and weaving magic with his spin deliveries, was a perfect package of trouble for every opponent India faced. It’s been a long time since he bid adieu to all forms of cricket, his career highlight would surely be the six sixes he smashed off Stuart Broad’s single over during India’s victorious campaign at the T20 World Cup 2007.

It has been 17 years since the incident which took place on September 19, 2007, when India took on England at the Kingsmead in Durban in match no. 21 of the marquee event. The incident makes one remember how dangerous Yuvraj could get if being hassled on the field, which was the case when he had an unwanted altercation with Andrew Flintoff who had some words exchanged with him.

The argument heated up and that’s when the umpires had to intervene to separate the two. Having a young Mahendra Singh Dhoni as the skipper by his side, Yuvraj decided to put on some otherworldly show. India had won the toss and elected to bat first and already built a reputable score for the Three Lions on the back of Gautam Gambhir’s (58 off 41) and Virender Sehwag’s (68 off 52) opening masterclass.

With the score at 155/3 in 16.4 overs when Robin Uthappa departed, Yuvraj took the crease and with Dhoni, progressed towards a daunting total at a good pace. It was during the over break between the 17th and 18th over that Yuvraj got involved in an on-field spat with Flintoff over something and the next over was handed to Stuart Broad by the skipper Paul Collingwood.

Now that Yuvraj was fuming with rage, he decided to unleash the inner beast and vented it all out on Broad, hitting him for not one, not two, not even three, but for six sixes in a row. All the six deliveries that were sent down to him by the fast bowler found their way out of the park. This was something not one witnesses every day in cricket.

A maximum of 36 runs were scored in that over as Yuvraj completed his fifty in a mere 12 balls, having an astounding strike rate of 416.7 which still remains the record of the fastest fifty by a batter in a T20 World Cup. He was awarded the Player of the Match award as India won the game by 18 runs, having scored 218/4 in 20 overs to which England’s reply was 200/6.

Have a look at Yuvraj’s monstrous knock –

What had actually happened?

Taking a trip down the memory lane, Yuvraj recounted what actually went on between Flintoff and him on the pitch. During the 17th over, which Flintoff bowled, Yuvraj said he bowled two very good deliveries which he sent for boundaries and ran a single on the last ball of the over. This irked Flintoff who expressed his disappointment to Yuvraj for playing those shots.

Yuvraj asked him to repeat what he said he said the same thing. That is when Yuvraj got real angry and charged on Flintoff, bringing in the umpires to separate the two. Yuvraj said he was filled with rage and wanted to take it out on the balls next bowled to him, which turned out to be the over of Stuart Broad and an incident that will always be etched in the history books. Yuvraj Singh scripted history as he went all guns blazing against Stuart Broad to smash him for six consecutive sixes in an over in an IND vs ENG encounter at the T20 World Cup 2007.
