New Delhi: Washington Sundar’s dismissal sparked a controversy during India’s first innings on the opening day of the fifth Test at Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on Friday, January 3. Sundar was controversially dismissed caught behind on 14 runs in the 67th over.
He looked good with the bat but his stay at the crease was cut short by the controversial dismissal. Pat Cummins bowled a short-length delivery, angled down the leg side. Sundar looked to play a pull and his reaction suggested that he might have missed the ball completely. Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey was pretty confident that there was a glove involved and was the first to appeal.
He had a quick word with the skipper Cummins who decided to go up for the review and there was a tiny spike on Snicko when the ball was next to the glove. The third umpire said “Ball is very close to the glove and I cannot differentiate any gap between glove and ball and there is a spike as well as the ball got closer to the glove” and asked onfield umpire Sharfuddoula to overturn his decision. Sundar looked extremely dejected with the decision and was clearly unhappy as he walked back to the dressing room.
