New Delhi: Frontline seamer Lungi Ngidi has shaken off his right calf injury to be named in South African squads for white-ball series’ against Afghanistan and Ireland after being on the sidelines during their three-match T20I series against West Indies in August.
South Africa have also included the uncapped trip of Nqaba Peter, Andile Simelane and Jason Smith in their ODI squad for series against Afghanistan and Ireland that will be played in the United Arab Emirates from next week.
Cricket South Africa announced on Monday that all-rounder Simelane has also been included to the T20 squad for the first time for the two games against Ireland.
From September 18, South Africa will play against Afghanistan in three ODIs in Sharjah, followed by two T20s against Ireland in Abu Dhabi, and round up the UAE trip with three ODIs against Ireland at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium.
Spinner Peter and all-rounder Smith have returned to the squad, having played T20s for the national team previously
“We have decided to give opportunities to some of the fringe players as well as those who have impressed in recent weeks and months,” South Africa’s white-ball coach Rob Walter said on Monday.
“This has been a deliberate move, in line with our goal of building a wider pool of players to choose from, as we prepare for the major tournaments taking place over the next 18 months, with a long-term view on the 50-over World Cup in 2027.”
South Africa were beaten by India in the final of the T20 World Cup in June, after which they were beaten 3-0 in T20 series by West Indies last month.
In their last ODI series in December last year, they went down 2-1 on their home soil to India.
