New Delhi: Pakistan re-appointed Shahid Aslam as batting coach for their white-ball squads after underwhelming performance in Australia where they won the ODI series but were beaten in the T20I series.
Pakistan won a three match ODI series 2-1, their first 50-over series win in Australia in 22 years. They were then blanked in the T20I series 0-3.
In both those series, Pakistan’s batters struggled to get going, neither being able to stay at the wicket nor scoring at a brisk pace.
It forced the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to bring back Shahid Aslam, who has been a coach at its High Performance Centre in Lahore for the last two years.
A qualified coach, Aslam has been involved in the Pakistan team set-up in different capacities including assistant coach, fielding coach and assistant manager for several years.
Former skipper Mohammad Yousuf was previously the batting coach before being appointed as a national selector. But He has since resigned as selector and batting coach to concentrate only on working at the High Performance Centre.
Recently, Yousuf recently also stepped down from his position at the HPC but the PCB didn’t accept his resignation. The PCB appointed Aslam as batting coach acting on a recommendation of interim white-ball coach Aaqib Javed.
Former pacer Javed was announced as the white-ball head coach until the Champions Trophy in February-March next year that Pakistan is scheduled to host.
Australian Jason Gillespie, under whom Pakistan won the ODI series in Australia, didn’t wish to become the all-format coach as he already has his hands full with the Test team.
Pakistan will next tour Zimbabwe for three ODIs and three T20Is, followed by another white-ball series in South Africa. Javed, who is also a senior national selector, will be with the team in these away tours.
