New Delhi: Danielle Collins made headlines at last month’s Australian Open after the second-round win over local girl Destanee Aiava. But it was not the win that pushed the American into the limelight, it was her post-match comments that catapulted her into worldwide attention.

Collins, 31, became a pantomime villain at Melbourne Park after being jeered and heckled by fans throughout her match Aiava. After her 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-2 over the home favourite, the 10th seed copper her ear, taunted the fans by blowing kisses and thanked them for “paying my bills” and said the A$290,000 (£147,500) she received for the victory would be used on a “five-star trip”.

Collins delivers on her five-star holiday promise

She delivered on her promise weeks later by going on a five-star vacation in the Bahamas. The 2022 Australian Open runner-up posted a video on social media, showing her enjoying a luxury holiday with friends at a resort in the popular Island nation. Collins posted a video on Instagram with the caption: “five-star vacay” at a Bahamas resort with friends.

The video shows her climbing down the stairs of her sea-view room and making her way to the white sand beach. The clip finishes with her slapping her backside, just like she did after winning a point against Aiava- after winning a point while playing pickleball.

Collins was knocked out of the Australian Open in the next round following a defeat Melbourne ended with a third-round defeat by compatriot Madison Keys in the straight sets. She was again heckled by the crowd.

She said after that match: “You can’t please everybody.

Collins’ best finish at the Australian Open came in 2022 when she reached the final but lost the summit clash against Aussie Ash Barty.

Collins earned a whopping $290,000 for her run to the third round in Australia.
